BARAA: Accessible Fashion in Tunisia

BARAA:Accessible Fashion in Tunisia

Kenza Fourati, proudly from Tunisia, has begun on a journey of her own with fashion.

Always intrigued by fashion, her desires and wishes to enter into the fashion industry have been met with great reward and praise from the Tunisian community. She has taken on the role of a fashion website, promoting various companies that sell clothing that appeal to many teenagers and young adult females and males in Tunisia. Her website is often adorned with clothing that has Arabic phrases such as "habibi", which when translated, means "My love". In addition to graphic t-shirts, her website also includes shoes from many companies. Known as "La Babouche", the shoes are sold in various colors and patterns including snake skin, leopard, and metallic.

Fourati claims that she wishes to promote other products that bring a new form of fashion to the country. For instance, one of her favorites is a company known as SeeMe. This company sells beautiful and delicate jewelry made by Tunisian mothers to the public.

Fourati's work with companies has created a new, and modern outlet for many young adults to purchase and admire other underground company's crafts. One company in particular, BARAA, creates beautiful and modern clothing for the public. BARAA is a company created in Tunisia, and their primary goal is to "take the necessary time to produce materials, make the right decision about fabrics, and the cut of a garment. It cherishes and respects the work of artisan craftsmen, particularly those Tunisian artisans who are the last to use ancestral skills and know-how".

In fact, the items on her website have become so popular and desirable within the country that much of the attire that she sells has begun to sell out.

  1. I like how this designer incorporates her culture into the pieces she has created. For example, the Arabic phrases printed on the clothes from her website. Kenza Fourati's goal to reach a younger audience will put a large influence on the way young people in Tunisia create fashion and promote it as well. It will be interesting to see what Fourati does next and if she becomes a famous designer internationally. Her impact in Tunisia with modern fashion pieces has definitely been well-received, as her website is sold out often, so I wonder if she will make a large impact worldwide!

  2. I adore how popular Fourati and her work has become so incredibly popular in Tunisia. She truly is an inspiration for those in her country to explore and experiment with their identity through fashion. A designer in Afghanistan, my country, named Rahiba Rahimi said that change begins in what you wear. People don't have to be extreme activists to change the status quos of their community. Simply expressing yourself is enough to create a chain reaction that brings the old traditions (of Tunisian fashion) with the new, modern 2019 styles.

  3. I think it's really interesting to read about a different kind of social media influencer. And it's interesting how it's written that it is so different because it is so different to that area, even though in our generation in the United States, social media influencers are a norm. Even though Kenza is a social media influencer, the stereotype in the U.S. is that their jobs don't have much purpose, even if they do have a passion for fashion and that's what they choose to use their voice for. I have so much respect for Kenza speaking out about her views on the fashion world.
